What is an oral evaluation?
An oral evaluation is a thorough exam of your mouth. For new patients it is the first step to understanding your dental health; for returning patients it is part of your regular six-month visit. It gives us the full picture before we recommend any treatment.
What we check
Your health history
We review your medical and dental history and the medications you take.
Digital X-rays
X-rays reveal decay between teeth, bone loss and other issues not visible to the eye.
Teeth and gums
We check every tooth for decay and measure your gum pockets to screen for gum disease.
Bite, jaw and soft tissues
We look at your bite and jaw joint and screen your mouth and throat for signs of oral cancer.
Your plan
Dr. Ramos explains what she found, answers your questions and recommends next steps. No pressure.
What to bring to your first visit

- Your physician’s phone number
You will also fill out a registration form and medical and dental history forms. Save time by completing them before your visit on our patient forms page.
Fees and payment
Every patient’s needs are different, so we discuss fees at your treatment planning appointment rather than quoting over the phone. We accept most dental insurance plans and self-pay. No insurance? Ask about our in-office discount dental plan.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I have an oral evaluation?
Most patients need one every six months. If you have gum disease, a history of cavities or other risk factors, we may recommend more frequent visits.
My gums bleed when I brush. What causes this?
Bleeding gums are a sign of inflammation or infection, often gingivitis or gum disease. Healthy gums do not bleed, so it is time for an evaluation.
Does insurance cover evaluations?
Most dental plans cover two evaluations a year as preventive care.
